Unlike stocks, real estate and other investments, diamonds have maintained their steady value in recent times. Of course, appraising diamonds and selling diamond jewelry is a bit more complicated than selling standard fine jewelry.

With metals, an appraiser simply needs to determine the purity, weight and current market price.

Diamonds, on the other hand, have many factors to consider when determining their value. Commonly referred to as the four C’s, the following guidelines are the most common factors considered by our diamond appraiser:

Carat: The carat is the stone’s weight with 1 carat equal to 0.2 grams. Contrary to what most people believe, the price for a diamond does not increase proportionally as the size goes up.

The price varies with a number of established carat weights. For this reason a 4 carat diamond will be more expensive than 4 1-carat diamonds of the same quality. Very small diamonds are expressed in points instead of a percentage of a carat, so a 0.3 carat diamond is 3 points.

Clarity: Inclusions in the diamond will dramatically decrease its value. These inclusions, or imperfections, can resemble air bubbles, pockets, foreign material in the diamond and cracks, producing a cloudy appearance. Perfect diamonds have absolutely no inclusions, they are extremely rare and the overwhelming majority of diamonds have some inclusions and blemishes.

Cut: The diamond’s cut also affects is value because it determines the diamond’s ability to reflect light. Because a diamond reflects light from facet to facet before finally dispersing the light from the topmost facet, a diamond with an inferior cut will have a lower level of brilliance.

Color: Diamonds also have a scale of color grading which goes form D-Z, with D being almost no presence of color and z signifying very prominent color. Clear diamonds, or those without color, allow light to pass through and disperse as a rainbow like a prism. These are often the most sought after and valuable.

Keep in mind very few diamonds are truly colorless and have at least some tinge of color. Most diamonds actually have some yellow tint from tiny amounts of nitrogen in the stone. Most faint yellow diamonds are considered inferior. Still, diamonds with large amounts of color can be bright enough to be considered fancy. These diamonds can have a significantly high value. Blue, pink and red diamonds are by far the most valuable.
